While Pennsylvania has been in the ravages of a brutal Opioid epidemic, another problem has reared its ugly head, Again. Over the past months an increase in synthetic drug overdoses has spiked in several areas in Pa and the Harrisburg region is no exception. As opioids become hard to find and locate, many people have turned to illicit substances such as K2 to seek a high. Harrisburg experienced a large spike in K2 overdoses in late 2016.

In addition, existing users of illicit substances such as cocaine have now been finding out that dealers have been putting opioids such as Fentanyl into their drug of choice. This has lead to increased overdoses in users that previously had no need of Naloxone.

The real issues with illicit substances aside from the obvious dangers, is that the user has no idea of what’s actually in the drug they are using. A brief check on social media will turn up a number of disturbing video’s of K2 users experiencing violent reactions to the synthetic drug.

The increasing number of dangerous concoctions available to users has lead to a spike in overdose calls for our Paramedic’s and EMT’s.
