What to do if you are choking!

First described in Emergency Medicine in 1974, and widely credited to Dr. Heimlich, is an easy to learn and use method of helping someone who is choking. The Heimlich maneuver or abdominal thrusts is the treatment for choking in patients that are conscious and over the age of one.
Always contact 911! If a person is appears to be choking, (making signs of choking, cannot breathe, cough, speak or make any sounds),
Ask “Are you choking?” if they nod yes, say “Can I help you?”
From behind the person, give thrust slightly above the belly button until:
The object is forced out
The person can breathe and makes sounds
or becomes unresponsive.
